5 Range Hood Cleaning & Maintenance Tips
Domestic range hoods and commercial restaurant range hoods are quite different in terms of size and usage, but they both have one thing in common: they both need regular cleaning and maintenance to serve their essential function. The good news is that most domestic range hoods, especially ductless range hoods, don’t require too much maintenance, but a little effort will undoubtedly go a long way to preventing bigger problems later on.

Did You Turn it Off and On Again?
Just like with many IT problems, turning the range hood off and on again can sometimes help you identify any potential problems. For example, if you turn on the range hood fan and hear an unusually loud whirring noise, there’s a good chance that it’s in need of repair or maintenance. When cooking, the inability to clear out smoke from the kitchen is another sign.
What exactly the problem is will depend, but at least by doing this you’ll know that there is a problem in the first place.

Prevention is the Best Medicine
A little bit of preventative care will go a long way towards avoiding more serious problems later on. There are three things you can do to keep your range hood clean and hopefully well-maintained with minimal effort.
First, go through your owner’s manual and read the do’s and don’ts of your range hood. They come in many shapes, sizes, and configurations, so know what you should and shouldn’t be doing to maintain it.
Second, keep the vent and filter inside clean. Grease clogs are amongst the most common reasons for range hoods slowing down and breaking down.
Last, try to avoid using the highest fan setting for prolonged periods. This may wear out the motor faster than desired.

Vent Cleaning & Degreasing
Perhaps the most important way to keep your range hood clean and functioning properly is to clean out the vented duct (if your range hood has one). Grease buildups along the duct force the fan to work harder to expel smoke, so spray on some degreaser and scrub away with a medium to harsh roughness cloth. Also, remove any surface grease that may build up on the motor.
-
Air Filter Cleaning
Reusable air filters inside of the range hood serve an important purpose, which is absorbing as much grease and ‘bad stuff’ as possible. This also makes them a priority for cleaning.
Remove the air filter and bathe them in a basin filled with degreaser and hot water. Allow to sit for 15-20 minutes, scrub clean (use gloves), and allow ample time to air dry. Replace the air filters when completely dry.
-
Clean the Range Hood Surface
Inside and outside of the range hood, keep the surfaces clean and sparkling with a little degreaser, household cleaning products, and a soft microfibre cloth. This is important for aesthetics, which is important, but also for preventing the buildup of grease and other substances that will adhere to the grease and range hood like bacteria and dirt.
