Helpful Tips for Extending the Lifespan of Your Home Appliances

Modern living is heavily dependent on labour-saving devices such as home appliances, so keeping them well-maintained and lasting for many years is a goal that can save you money and plenty of headaches as well.

Below are five key tips to extend the lifespan of your home appliances:

01. Regular Cleaning and Maintenance

There’s a reason this is number one. Regular cleaning and routine maintenance of your home appliances are perhaps the best ways of extending their lifespan and ensuring that they work properly now and in the future.

Almost all common problems with home appliances can be traced back to improper maintenance and failure to clean, which subsequently can lead to buildups of debris, grease, etc.

Keep your appliances clean, inside and out, and inspect the components from time to time. This means having a schedule in place for regular cleaning and another for deep cleaning, just like restaurants and many other businesses use. For example, try to clean your stovetop once or twice a week, just cleaning the surface and the hobs. Every couple of months, however, do a deep cleaning inside the oven, bathe the racks in degreaser, and take apart the hobs for deep cleaning.

02. Proper Use and Care

Another important tip is to always use your appliance properly and for its intended purpose only. Your washing machine may be able to handle a reasonably big load, but you should never try to take a tumble inside of it yourself for a viral video and you definitely shouldn’t let your toddler or pet play inside the washing machine’s drum.

Now, to be realistic, you’re probably not spending your quality free time reading instruction manuals for your microwave or your washing machine, but the point is that if you fail to use your appliance properly you could end up injuring yourself or others or damaging the appliance. If it’s under warranty, you’re not likely to get any coverage if it’s discovered that you used the device improperly.

03. Avoiding Overuse and Overloading

Overusing your appliance may seem counterintuitive. Aren’t appliances supposed to be used? Yes, but depending on the appliance and its quality, it may not be able to withstand overuse. Commercial deep fryers and flat tops, for example, are designed to be used all day, all night. Your stove at home? It isn’t meant for industrial-scale baking, so use it within reason. Overuse can lead to accelerating the wear and tear on the appliance.

When it comes to overloading, this mostly applies to things like washing machines and dryers. The simple answer is to use common sense, which unfortunately isn’t so common these days. Don’t use metal cutlery in the microwave, don’t overload your washing machine, and if in doubt, refer to the instruction manual or ask a friend or relative.

04. Prompt Repairs and Replacements

Small problems with your home appliances can grow into bigger problems later on down the road, so it’s better to have them repaired sooner rather than later. Worn, damaged, or faulty components should be repaired or replaced by a qualified domestic appliance technician near you to ensure that your appliances work well for years to come.

05. Energy Efficiency Settings

Many newer home appliances come with eco or low-energy settings that can help cut down on your energy expenditures, but they can also reduce wear and tear as well. Depending on how you use your appliances, consider using energy-efficient settings when possible.
