Modern glass stove tops offer superb aesthetics and a fantastic cooking experience. There’s so much to love about a glass stove top, and it’s certainly true that the uniform surface makes it quite easy to keep clean.

The coil hobs of yesteryear tend to be a pain to clean and many older appliances that still have these sorts of hobs often go months (or longer) without a good thorough cleaning. Conversely, glass stove tops are much easier to clean and there are no components that need to be plucked out and put back in place. Don’t let this ease of cleaning become complacence, however! Good, frequent cleaning will keep your glass stove top looking great and working properly for many years to come.

Below are a few quick tips on how to keep your glass stove top clean and tidy:

Keep it Clean Every Day

Make a habit of wiping down your stove top after every use, even if there isn’t any food debris or splashes of grease visibly on the surface. Of course, you’ll have to let it cool first (or not at all if it’s induction). Most cooktops have red dots that light up when one or more hob burners is still hot, so wait for the light to turn off (or other indications as per your specific stove top).

Afterwards, apply a mild cleaning detergent to the surface and use gentle scrubbing motions with a microfibre cloth or sponge to clean the surface. Use another cloth to clean off the surface and let dry. Window cleaner is sometimes used to give it a nice appearance afterwards but it isn’t necessary.

Do a Routine Deep Clean

If you follow the first tip, you won’t need to deep clean as often. Deep cleaning is recommended perhaps once a month, but try to do it at least once every two months or so.

Deep cleaning your glass stove top is a lot like just giving it a normal cleaning, except you’re trying to knock away any caked on grease or food debris. For most people, the one or two hobs that are most commonly used will gradually accumulate a little bit if a ring around the diameter of your most used pots/pans. Whether it’s spilled pasta starch, egg white, grease, or any other sort of food, it can burn on the hob and leave a tough stain behind.

To clean tougher stains, use a more heavy-duty oven cleaning product that is safe to use on glass surfaces. Spray on the surface, allow time to eat away at the debris, then scrub away using gloves and a sponge or microfibre cloth.

White vinegar can alternatively be used both for regular and deep cleaning. Vinegar is a miracle cleaner, really, it just has a pretty awful smell that many can’t tolerate too long. Crack open a window or two and let the vinegar do its work, then scrub and dry off the surface.

Avoid Scratches or Cracks

One big advantage of old-fashioned electric/gas hob burners is that they’re often made of tough cast iron or other robust materials, so they can stand up to quite a bit of clanging around from your pots and pans. Glass stove tops, not so much.

Unfortunately, glass stove tops can be subjected to scratches, scuffs, or even serious damage such as cracks if you aren’t careful around the kitchen. Try to only use pots and pans that are compatible with glass stove tops (for induction especially), and do not use pots or pans with scuffed, rough bottom surfaces.
