Top 5 Most Important Domestic Appliances in Your Home

Domestic appliances come in all shapes and sizes, from the humble little toaster to big ol’ ranges and modern refrigerators. What are the most important domestic appliances every home should have?

1. Oven

Unless you’re filthy rich and live off restaurant food and Deliveroo, Menulog, or Uber Eats, chances are you still like to do some good, honest cooking from the comfort of home. Ovens are necessary time and labour-saving devices that sure as heck beat cooking in a stew pot over a hearth (although there’s something rustic and authentic about that).

Every good home needs a quality oven that gets your lasagna, baked goods, or whatever else your appetite calls for throughout the day. The good news is that in Australia, there’s quite a bit of choice for different budgets, gas or electric, just the basics or complete with advanced features.

The bad news is that all ovens will wear out over time, often breaking down and needing quality repairs. Don’t let a faulty oven ruin your family dinners and have it repaired sooner rather than later.

2. Refrigerator

Modern refrigeration is absolutely necessary unless you like going to shop for meat and produce every day – and there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, either; it’s just time-consuming and impractical for our modern lives!

If you like to be time-efficient and stock up with bags and bags of perishable food items every couple of weeks, you’re absolutely going to need a big enough refrigerator to fit all of it. Moreover, that refrigerator needs to work hard to keep food from going bad, so even a slight mechanical malfunction can lead to ruination and spoilage.

3. Stovetop

Although this appliance is often lumped in with ovens (since ranges usually come with a stovetop), separate stovetops are ideal for home and portable stovetops are great for camping.

Home stovetops like induction stovetops are safe, excellent, and energy-efficient, but they are also prone to breaking down over time. Keep your stovetop in tip-top shape with routine repairs and maintenance.

4. Dishwasher

For some households, dishwashers are unnecessary; for others, they’re an absolute life-saver. No matter how you may feel about dishwashers, however, it’s undeniable that they are a time-saver in homes with lots of dishes and cutlery in need of washing.

While dishwashers are certainly convenient and generally quite dependable, they are prone to many mechanical errors and faults that reduce their effectiveness or simply stop them from working properly. Why toss it when you can have it repaired at competitive prices?

5. Range Hood

Now, this last domestic ‘appliance’ might not seem like an appliance at all, but rather an ancillary feature of modern kitchens above the oven. Range hoods are nevertheless extremely important for a variety of reasons. Not only do they direct smoke, steam, and grease away from the kitchen to create more pleasant cooking experiences, but they also keep the rest of the kitchen relatively clean and free of dirt and grease.

The downside is, of course, that they themselves tend to get quite greasy and dirty over time. That’s actually a good thing, since they’re doing what they’re supposed to. Just be sure to have the filters cleaned and/or replaced and the vents cleaned inside and out regularly.
